The shepherds and drovers of Scotland & the North of England needed a dog that could stand for hours guarding their flocks, but it also had to be built for speed & stamina. Living in the wildest country, he would have to have a warm undercoat & a harsh topcoat to keep him in good health in the bitter climate. The farmers had worked & bred animals all their lives, and by selective breeding, whether with a sheepdog strain or a mixture of Scottish Deerhound and Collie, they bred this hardy working type dog for their daily companion, without ever considering keeping records of any sort. They would
not have bothered whether their dogs had the correct Collie markings or followed
any particular standard. They must have followed a pattern however, to
some extent, as the Beardie has mainly bred true to type, and most
important of all, the typical Beardie characteristics are predominant in their
descendants: although lively and active, they are trainable, and their
boisterousness is usually because they are so willing to please; most are
blessed wit that typical Bearded Collie "far seeing" expression….
